Walking Tour in Mexico City

This walking tour takes you to the oldest Ashkenazi synagogue in town while strolling past the founding heart of Mexico City. We will visit the Headquarters of the Spanish Inquisition which persecuted Jews for three centuries. We will also see the buildings and influence left in the city by the Jewish before visiting the Museum of Jewish Heritage. You will learn the story of a Mexican diplomat who helped saved the lives of people fleeing the Nazi regime. At the end we see the Memory & Tolerance Museum and the burning grounds of the Inquisition.

Visit the heritage of the Jewish immigration at the heart of Mexico in a 2.3 mile, 3.5 hours walk!

This tour takes you inside the oldest Ashkenazi synagogue that has now been turned into a museum. See the influence left behind in the architecture and businesses in the living quarters of the 16th, 19th & 20th century migrants.  See the magnificent buildings left behind by generations of hard-working Jewish families including the first national bank of Mexico and the site of the first Kosher restaurant.

Travel back in time at the Mexico-Israel Cultural Institute with the exhibits of artifacts and photographs of the newcomers. Wander past Alameda Park, the site of the burning grounds of the Spanish Inquisition. See the gardens and fountains at the Fine Arts Palace. See the birthplace of the CDI, the Israelite Community Club.

Discover the origins of the two main Jewish migrations to Mexico and admire commemorative monuments.

500 Years of Jewish History tour is given in English. 

YOUR TOUR HOST​

Your host will be wearing a yellow shirt and cap. All of our hosts are local natives from Mexico City, speak at least two languages and have different college degrees related to the tours, are trained in first aid procedures and are willing to help you with those special questions that may arise on your visit. Some of our hosts are also nationally licensed tour guides.

 

SCHEDULE / WEATHER / DETOURS

Arrive on time, our visit begins at 3:00 PM on the dot, we will appreciate if you show up 15 minutes in advance. Tour ends at 6:30 PM.

The duration of our tour is approximately 3.5 hours, rain or shine, depending on the size of the group. In case of rain, our tour will make its best to spend as much time as possible indoors. In case of unforseen closure of streets or venues, we are always prepared with an equivalent or alternate route. 

THE TOUR

On this tour you will discover 500 years of Jewish history at the heart of the Mexico. The most important monuments in the tour are the Old Synagogue, the ruins of the Main Aztec Temple, the Headquarters of the Spanish Inquisition, Hauser & Zivy Co. Building, Boker Haus, National Bank of Mexico, Former National Library, Lerdo de Tejada Library, Chancellery Museum, the Mexico-Israel Cultural Institute, the Ottoman Clock Tower, the Iturbide Palace, the origins of the Granat Movie Chain, the Gilberto Bosques Monument, Memory & Tolerance Museum, Juarez Memorial and Alameda Park. 

VERY IMPORTANT NOTICE

Due to the ceremonial nature of the buildings to be visited, we may encounter temporary closures at any time so we are always prepared with an alternate and equivalent route as we may never guarantee the access to the public venues.

Food, drinks, backpacks, big bags, umbrellas, selfie sticks and flash photography are not allowed in any of the buildings, if you are carrying some of these, the entrance may not be permitted.

END POINT / FACILITIES / TRANSPORTATION

Visits do not return to the starting point; Tour ends at the west end of Alameda Park at #9 Doctor Mora Street. One block from the Hilton Reforma Hotel and next to the Hidalgo Metro and Metrobus stations. 

Your host will always remain with you until he makes sure everyone has the right directions and/or help for their next destination.

CANCELLATION POLICY

In case you need to cancel, please let us know ASAP in writing or, if on same day, by phone at +52 (55) 1355-2122 (whatsapp-enabled). In case we have to miss you, we will be very grateful if you save us extra efforts. If you don't cancel and don't show up for the tour, we will understand that you are forfeiting your right to any refund and to re-book. There are no refunds on partial and/or full advance payments for paid or private tours if you don't cancel at least seven days before the tour. If you cancel at least seven days in advance, there will be a 20% processing fee charge.    

IMPORTANT

1. Tour is by reservation only.  

2. Please wear comfortable walking shoes and come as light as possible, this is one long walk.

3. Wear something to protect you from the sun; cap, shades, sunscreen, even if it's cloudy.

4. Bring a camera, we love to show you little treasures.

5. Be willing to have some fun as we go through various eras lasting 500 years.
